Thomas Ashment Sr. journal, 1851-1899.

Thomas Ashment's journal begins in 1851. This was two years after his marriage, three years after he was baptized into the Church. It ends in 1899, a year before his death. In addition to telling his life story, Thomas Ashment Sr. writes about the Crimean War. The English government makes religious proclamations--requiring fasts and Sabbath keeping--to assist the war effort. He refers to the Sepoy Rebellion in India 1857-1858, and the American Civil War, 1861-1865 (he lists the exact population of both sides of the war). The journal includes a newspaper article about Wilford Woodruff's 90th Birthday celebration, a list of Latter-day prophets and apostles with their birthdates, a list of New Testament disciples and a little history on each one. His journal is dotted with gospel study notes and accounts of spiritual experiences. He records stories from missionaries and stories from the Deseret News. He takes notes on trees and on different countries. Ashment's journal records income for the Crewkerne Branch in Somerset, England. It includes his family's history.
